What is Pay it Forward “PIF” Living?
Pay it Forward “PIF” Living is a new non-profit organization that has been created to get more people involved in the spirit of giving. We utilize various corporate and social events to provide food donations for the Food Bank’s Back-Pack Kids program.
Back-Pack Kids is a program that provides nutritious, easy-to-prepare weekend food for elementary school children in the Children in Transit (CIT) program. Children who have been identified as CIT’s are homeless. This means that they live in a motel, with friends or on the streets.
With the Nevada statewide jobless rate still on the rise and a 173% increase in Statewide Food Stamp requests, the need for food donations is more important than ever. “The truth is that there are still layoffs in numerous communities, businesses are closing, and people aren’t working full work weeks,” said Doris Phelps, the Food Bank’s Chief Marketing and Philanthropy Officer.”
This has resulted in an increasing number of homeless individuals that include school children. We are helping to improve the number of food donations for these children through Pay it Forward PIF events.
People who attend PIF events are asked to bring healthy food items for the production of Snack Packs. A Snack Pack is comprised of 3 to 4 non-perishable items that typically include a boxed drink, energy bar, noodles, cereal, and or fruit cup.
Time is allocated at each event to set-up a production line where everyone helps to assemble Snack Packs. It typically takes 30 minutes or less to assemble the Snack Packs. Once the Snack Packs are made everyone can resume their other activities.
Snack Packs are distributed to children through the Food Bank’s Back-Pack Kids program and the local school system. It’s a very worthwhile and successful program.
Everyone who attends a PIF event is encouraged to “Pay it Forward” by having three events of their own.
“My wife Lesslie and I got the idea for PIF Living after our family donated time at a local food bank to assemble meal packs. It’s a great way to get together with others and contribute to a meaningful cause. People who participate in a PIF Event feel that it is a very fun and rewarding experience” said Robert Bauer, President and Chief Snack Pack Director of PIF Living.
There are several different types of PIF events that can be used to create Snack Packs. The following are a few examples;
1) Company Events – The “Corporate Challenge” – Local business owners are encouraged to host a PIF Corporate Challenge for their employees. – see details on Company Events page
2) Birthday Parties – Children are asked to bring a specified food item instead of a traditional gift.
3) Church Small Groups – Small Groups are also a great venue to gather and assemble food items.
4) Networking Events – The PIF Snack Pack Party concept also works well for local networking events providing a great way to meet other business owners and accomplish something good for others.
Our goal is to expand the PIF program nationwide by involving many individuals, communities and businesses. Together we can help feed the many less fortunate children in need.
